Preserving Tradition in a Changing World: MAN 3 Sleman Students Learn from Panglipuran Village

Sleman (MAN 3 Sleman) – As part of an effort to strengthen culture-based and contextual learning, students of MAN 3 Sleman visited Panglipuran Tourism Village, Bangli Regency, Bali Province, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. (WITA). The visit was conducted within the framework of the GALAKSI 2026 program, which emphasizes experiential learning through direct engagement with local communities and cultural environments.

Panglipuran Village is widely recognized as one of Bali’s leading tourism villages, distinguished by its commitment to environmental cleanliness, orderly spatial planning, and the preservation of traditional customs. These characteristics make the village a living example of cultural sustainability, offering students a valuable opportunity to observe how traditional values can be maintained amid modern societal changes.

From a socio-cultural perspective, Panglipuran belongs to the Bali Aga community, a group of indigenous Balinese people known for their strong adherence to ancestral traditions. The village has developed over centuries and continues to uphold an adat-based social system passed down through generations. This cultural continuity is reflected in the uniform architectural design of traditional houses and settlement patterns, which embody principles of social equality, harmony, and communal responsibility.

In addition to its cultural and historical significance, Panglipuran Village was selected as an educational destination due to its relatively accessible location, allowing student groups to visit comfortably without compromising the depth of learning objectives. This accessibility supports the effectiveness of field-based learning activities while ensuring meaningful educational outcomes.

One of the accompanying teachers, Hasti Budiyaningrum, highlighted the educational value of the visit.

“Panglipuran offers a cool, clean environment where local wisdom is strongly preserved. It clearly demonstrates that tradition can continue to thrive alongside modernization,” she stated.

The experience also left a reflective impression on the students. Lintang Wijaya Putri, one of the participants, shared her perspective on the visit.

“This visit helped me understand that cultural preservation is closely connected to environmental care and the way a community organizes its daily life,” she explained.

Through this educational visit, students of MAN 3 Sleman gained authentic insights into cultural preservation, environmental awareness, and respect for ancestral heritage. The activity is expected to foster students’ critical awareness of modernization, encouraging them to view progress and tradition not as opposing forces, but as elements that can coexist in a balanced and sustainable manner.
