A Journey Beyond the Summit: Head of MAN 3 Sleman Sends Off PALAMAGA Team for Mount Lawu Expedition

Sleman (MAN 3 Sleman) — MAN 3 Sleman once again demonstrated its commitment to character building through outdoor education by officially sending off the PALAMAGA (MAN 3 Sleman Nature Lovers Club) team for a mountain expedition to Mount Lawu, held from April 3–5, 2026.

Carrying the theme “Tapak Rimba Lawu: Climb with Ethics, Return with Meaning,” the expedition involves 16 student participants, accompanied by one supervisor and two teacher mentors. The program is designed to run smoothly while providing meaningful and transformative experiences for all participants.

In his remarks, the Head of MAN 3 Sleman, Singgih Sampurno, described Mount Lawu not merely as a landscape of earth and rocks, but as a “classroom without walls”—a true place of learning for nature enthusiasts. He emphasized that the journey is not just about reaching the summit, but about the process of learning, character building, and strengthening spiritual values.

“I remind my students to uphold important values throughout the journey: never neglect worship under any circumstances, prioritize good manners and safety, and preserve nature by following the principle—leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures, and kill nothing but time,” he advised.

This expedition requires not only strong physical and mental preparation but also serves as part of shaping a golden generation toward Indonesia 2045. Beyond being a form of tadabbur alam (reflecting upon nature), the activity also implements the concept of ecotheology, a program promoted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Through this experience, students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of the relationship between humans, nature, and divine values. The expedition also reflects the application of the Panca Cinta values: love for Allah and His Messenger, love for knowledge, love for others, love for the environment, and love for oneself.

As part of real action in ecotheology, participants will plant eight tree seedlings, supported by the KUA of Depok Subdistrict. In addition, a social initiative involving the distribution of Qur’ans is also included in the expedition agenda.

With this program, it is hoped that students will not only gain climbing experience but also return with meaningful life values, strengthened character, and a deeper commitment to environmental care rooted in Islamic principles. (mia)
