Sleman (MAN 3 Sleman) — The atmosphere in the meeting room felt noticeably different on Monday (April 13, 2026). Dozens of members of the Mayoga English Club (MEC) gathered with great enthusiasm to take part in a flagship program titled “MEC Talkative: From Classroom to the World: The Privilege of English.”
This was no ordinary English session. MEC brought a global perspective by inviting two international students from Kazakhstan—Mariyam Askhat and Qamar Nurlybay—who are currently studying in the English Education Program at Universitas Islam Indonesia.
Highlighting English as a “privilege” that opens doors to the world, Mariyam and Qamar shared personal stories of how the language has enabled them to cross borders and connect globally. Their presence inspired MEC members to see English not as a difficult subject, but as a powerful tool for international communication.

The Talkative program was designed to be dynamic and engaging. Key activities included interactive presentations, group discussions and presentations, speaking practice, and educational games.
Ami Syamsiah, an English teacher at MAN 3 Sleman, explained that the main goal of the program is to eliminate students’ fear of making mistakes when speaking English. “Through direct interaction with international speakers, students are expected to overcome their fear of speaking and significantly improve their speaking skills,” she said.
Beyond language proficiency, the program also helped students build confidence in public speaking, expand their vocabulary, and develop the habit of using English in daily school life.
By the end of the event, members of the Mayoga English Club left with renewed motivation to actively communicate in English and embrace it as part of their identity as a globally competitive future generation. (ami)
