Sleman (MAN 3 Sleman) — Guidance and Counseling (BK) teachers from MAN 3 Sleman participated in a national workshop titled “Early Detection of School Bullying through Sociometric Analysis: Creating Safe and Child-Friendly Schools Free from Bullying.” The event was held at the Convention Hall of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on Monday (February 9, 2026). The workshop served as a professional development platform for school counselors to strengthen their capacity in addressing students’ mental health challenges in today’s rapidly changing environment.
The workshop opened with remarks from the Dean of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Dr. Sigit Purnama, M.Pd., who highlighted that children’s mental health conditions today differ significantly from previous generations. He emphasized the importance for school counselors to continuously update their knowledge and understanding of bullying and its impact so they can provide relevant and effective support.
One of the keynote speakers, Prof. Dr. Imam Machali, S.Pd.I., M.Pd., explained how generational shifts influence individual resilience in dealing with life challenges. He outlined four major types of bullying: physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying.

Bullying, he noted, is not merely an individual issue but a school ecosystem problem with far-reaching consequences. Its impacts range from psychological issues—such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem—to academic difficulties like reduced concentration and declining performance. Socially, victims may withdraw, struggle to build relationships, feel unsafe, and face long-term mental health risks.
Prof. Imam also underscored the role of sociometry in education. This method helps map peer relationships, identify dominant groups, and detect socially isolated students. According to him, successful learning is shaped not only by teaching methods and materials but also by students’ psychological safety and a supportive classroom climate. (nia)
